“It's complicated” I couldn’t figure out what else to
say. Why am I getting this tense? I asked myself and got nothing.
I stared at the outside views to avoid further
questions but I could feel her stare and so I looked at her.
She was looking at me with a lot of curiosity. I
managed a weak smile and continued staring at the outside views losing control
of memories that I always try to keep aside.
She didn't ask me anything for a while after that. I
guess she decided to leave me alone seeing my face that lost its color as she
asked that question.
After a few miles, she decided to break the silence
and asked,
“Hey, what are we going to do when we reach there?”
“Huh… my phone is dead so, we don’t have many options.
We can figure something out as we reach there.”
“Hmmm,” her nervousness was quite visible.
I looked outside again. Remembering her is always a
bitter-sweet experience. She changed my life and left me. Her influence is
still in my life, and the weird fact is that she doesn’t know that after that
love, my life turned into a disaster. The bus moved faster. She too is
engrossed in some thoughts and her face was anxious. She must be thinking about
what to do when she arrives at her uncle’s house.
My eyes were drooping as I wanted some rest. I
understood that my body was calling in for some sleep. I tried my best to be
awake as I have to take care of her but I lost the battle as the cold waves of
wind caressed my face.
When I was aware of what I did, I woke up in a panic
and looked around. I saw that she is wide awake and smiled at her like an
idiot.
She smiled and told me “It’s not Thriprayar yet. So,
don’t worry”
“I’m totally exhausted after the whole shoot and
somehow lost it to sleep. Sorry” I apologized and she gave me an ‘It’s ok. I
can understand’ look that made me feel relaxed.
I looked out of the window feeling refreshed after
that quick nap. From the boards of the shops, I understood that we are almost
there.
From then on my thought was how to get her safely to
her uncle’s house. Her uncle’s house is only 6km from Thriprayar. But how!!
After thinking a lot, I suddenly remembered that I have a friend nearby. It’s
sorted. All that I have to do is charge my phone…
The Conductor announced that the next stop is
Thriprayar. As she stood up lifting her bag, I noticed that her face was tense
and had beads of sweat even in this cool weather.
“Don’t worry. I have a friend nearby. He will be able
to help us get home.”
She just nodded at me. Maybe she is tense about what
will happen at her uncle's house.
We got off the bus and she looked at me enquiring
‘what now?’
“I need to charge my phone first”
“Where should we go?” she was getting tenser.
“There is a tea shop there… it’s always open a
night…let’s go there”
She nodded and literally darted in the direction that
I pointed. She wasn’t familiar with the place and yet walked like she’s lived
here for years. I had a hard time catching up with her with all my luggage.
When we got to the shop I ordered tea and samosas as
usual.
“What do you want?” I asked her
“Nothing” she replied still consumed by her problems.
I ordered a copy for her and she accepted it with a smile. I asked the shop
owner for permission and plugged in my phone and called my friend. Luckily he
picked up and was home.
“My friend is home and will be here in a couple of
minutes,” I told her
She was still confused and tense. Maybe she didn't
feel safe or she might be scared because I called my friend.
Before we finished eating and were back in awkward
silence, my friend called to say that he is here.
Even though we haven't seen each other for a while,
the first thing he asked me was,
“Is she your girlfriend?" with an unbelievable
face
I looked at him shockingly “No Man. It’s nothing like
that. I will explain everything later in detail. Now give me the key”
I think she heard that. This idiot of a friend. I
sighed in disgust. I gave him my bag and told him to wait there until I came
back.
“I can't simply wait here” I understood that he wanted
to eat something. I gave him 100 Rupees that was left in my pocket
“I will be back soon”
I knew she won't be and as I expected she wasn't
comfortable with his bike but we had no choice. I started the bike. She kept
her bag in the gap and sat behind me. I normally drive slowly but I was lost in
my thoughts and was faster than usual.
How she is going to manage!! That thought worried me.
But I was more worried that will this be the last that I will see her. Shall I
ask for her contact number? Will she take it the wrong way!!
Before I could decide whether I should or shouldn’t,
we reached Chirakkal. I felt like I was riding too fast. I turned my head and
asked her
“Hei, where to now?”
“That house after the bridge” she replied.
I stopped the bike in front of a big mansion, as I
assumed it will be her uncle's house. She quickly got off the bike, took her
bag, and looked at my face. My heart started beating faster. I looked into her
eyes and waited for her to say something.
She was out of breath. I could see that.
“Thank you,” she said with relief.
“Ok” I smiled at her but that one didn’t last.
She walked over to the gate and opened it.
I felt like I am losing something. I wanted to ask her
something. But I couldn't figure out what. It felt like I lost my voice. I
couldn't even breathe properly. My eyes were on her. She was going away. She
didn't even look back once. Maybe, her situation is worse than I can imagine.
The door opened. Maybe it's her uncle. I started my bike to go back. Maybe it’s
the end of the story.
continues....
